Remembering the awful Game of Thrones finale by everything the cast savagely said about it
I’m still traumatised
It might have been five years since the Game of Thrones finale aired, but the wounds still feel as fresh ever. And it seems viewers weren’t the only ones who absolutely hated the ending, as the cast has been less than complimentary about the whole thing too.
So, from disappointing character arcs to massive fights with the showrunners, let’s hear everything the cast have savagely said about the Game of Thrones finale.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Nikolaj played Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones and his character met a slightly anti-climatic end alongside Cersei in the finale.
He’s previously talked about how badly he clashed with the showrunners about his character, explaining: “I got into all these arguments, fights with the writers, and they’re like, ‘yeah we hear you and we respect you, but we don’t care. The funny thing is we’ve gone through these song and dance routines every season since season four, where I come back and I’m like, ‘this doesn’t make sense!’”
Kit Harington
We all knew this actor was going to be included in the list after his very savage recent comments regarding the finale of Game of Thrones.

During an interview with GQ, he admitted: “I think there were mistakes made, story-wise towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work. I think if there was any fault with the end of ‘Thrones, it’s that we were all so f*king tired, we couldn’t have gone on longer. And so I understand some people thought it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I’m not sure there was any alternative.” Yikes!
Emilia Clarke
Emilia Clarke was also disappointed by the ending of the show and her ultimate character arc. I mean, who wasn’t fuming at what they decided to do with Daenerys’ storyline?
In an interview with The Guardian she admitted she struggled to deal with plot choices for the final season, saying: “It was definitely a challenge. I walked out my door, took my keys, forgot my phone and just kept walking.”
In another discussion with The Times, she spoke about her frustration with how her character was treated compared to Jon Snow. She explained: “I really felt for her. And yeah, was I annoyed that Jon Snow didn’t have to deal with something? He got away with murder — literally.
“I knew how I felt when I first read it, and I tried, at every turn, not to consider too much what other people might say, but I did always consider what the fans might think — because we did it for them, and they were the ones who made us successful, so … it’s just polite, isn’t it?”
Lena Headey
Lena wished her Cersei got a “better death” and I won’t lie, her being crushed by rubble wasn’t exactly how I saw her character going out.
Speaking to The Guardian, she admitted: “Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.”
Isaac Hempstead
Isaac thought the Game of Thrones finale script was actually a “joke” and honestly same. He told Entertainment Daily: “When I got to the [Dragonpit scene] in the last episode and they’re like, ‘What about Bran?’ I had to get up and pace around the room.
“I genuinely thought it was a joke script and that [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] sent to everyone a script with their own character ends up on the Iron Throne. ‘Yeah, good one guys. Oh sh*t, it’s actually real?.'”
