We asked ChatGPT for the best student Halloween costumes and they’re so 2012 it hurts
It literally suggested dressing up as an emoji and I’m upset
Not to alarm you, but Halloween is literally a week today and if you’ve not started thinking about your costume yet then you’re probably going to be stuck just sticking some devil horns or cat ears on a basic mini-dress from ASOS again this year. And it’s safe to say that poor effort is not getting you on ANY Halloween best-dressed lists.
According to Depop and Pinterest, Barbie and Ken, The Little Mermaid, Posh and Becks and Hailey and Justin Bieber are this year’s hottest Halloween costumes. But what does AI think students should be going as this Halloween?
We’ve already asked ChatGPT for lots of its uni-related wisdoms including its advice on how to make friends (apparently you should just start as many campus flash mobs as you can), a uni packing list and the stereotypes of every Russell Group uni student.
But, destined to not just see a million and one Barbie costumes at every single uni Halloween party next week, we asked for ChatGPT’s best Halloween costume recommendations for students and honestly, I’ve now been led to believe that ChatGPT is really just a millennial in disguise.
So, here are ChatGPT’s recommendations for student Halloween costumes this year:
‘Instant Noodle’
“Turn yourself into a giant instant noodle cup by using a cylindrical costume with a foam lid and chopsticks. Add a fun twist by attaching nutrition facts to the costume.”
Starting off strong with the first ChatGPT Halloween costumes is an instant noodle. It’s like it just Googled “relatable student things” and a Pot Noodle was the first thing to come up so it ran with it. Nothing screams a fun twist like nutrition facts!
‘Living Meme’
Most Read
“Pick a well-known meme character and bring it to life. For instance, go as the ‘This is Fine’ dog or the ‘Distracted Boyfriend.'”
This is when it started to go all millennial on me. I can’t say I’ve thought about the “this is fine” dog in years and I’m upset that it’s back in my brain. This is the kind of costume I’d expect from someone who collects empty Monster cans in their window, uses XD unironically and who would probably bark at me in the club. Just no.
‘Avocado Toast’
“Create a humorous avocado toast costume with an avocado-shaped hat and toast-coloured clothing. You can even wear a sign that says, ‘Millennial Breakfast.'”
Not sure I’d put humorous and avocado toast in the same sentence but there you go. Millennial breakfast time!
‘Bubble Wrap’
“Wrap yourself in bubble wrap and go as Human Bubble Wrap. It’s a simple and humorous costume that’s sure to get some laughs.”
ChatGPT has such an obsession with bubble wrap and I don’t have a clue why. In ChatGPT’s uni packing list it said: “Stay stress-free by wearing bubble wrap to pop your worries away”. At least its multi-purpose if you use it for a Halloween costume too, though.
‘Social Media Influencer’
“Satirise social media influencers by dressing up as a parody influencer with an exaggerated personality, selfie stick, and fake sponsorships.”
Can’t wait to dust of my selfie stick that’s been sat gathering dust for six years. ChatGPT was way ahead of the curve on this though one since these students dressed up as Molly-Mae, Tommy and their daughter Bambi. Obsessed.
‘Error 404 Costume Not Found’
“Embrace the tech theme by dressing up as a web page error. Make a cardboard ‘404’ sign and attach it to your costume, and add some HTML ‘code’ for extra flair.”
Wow not AI suggesting a coding theme costume how self-obsessed. But this is computer science students summed up in a Halloween costume. Snore!
‘2023 Internet Slang’
“Create a costume inspired by the internet slang and memes that are trending in 2023. You can dress as a ‘Vibing Cat’, ‘Yeet’ or ‘Big Chonker Energy’.”
Not the 2023 internet slang. I feel physically unwell. Yeet? Big chonker energy? Is it 2012? Jesus Christ.
‘Zoom Meeting’
“Wear a business suit on top and pyjama bottoms on the bottom half. Carry a cardboard cut out of a Zoom interface and introduce yourself as ‘Mr./Ms. Zoom Meeting’.”
What in the 2020?? I never want to think of the Zoom uni era ever again why would I dress up as it for Halloween?
‘Trending Emoji’
“Choose a popular emoji and craft a costume based on it. For instance, you could go as the laughing-crying emoji or the heart-eyes emoji.”
Nah because if I walk into a uni Halloween party and there are people dressed up as EMOJIS then I’m heading straight out of there. And in what alternate universe has the crying-laughing emoji ever been cool? I thought we all agreed to boycott it years ago?
‘Student loan debt’
“Wrap yourself in Monopoly money or fake dollar bills to represent your student loan debt burden. Carry around a stack of oversized loan statements.”
Okay but this one is pretty terrifying not going to lie.
‘FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)’
“Attach various event flyers, concert tickets, and party invitations to your costume. Act anxious about missing out on the best parties.”
Now we’re getting all existential! If you’ve actually made it out the house and to a Halloween party why not just pretend you haven’t by dressing up as FOMO why don’t you!
‘Identity Crisis’
“Wear clothing with various identity badges such as ‘Doctor,’ ‘Chef,’ ‘Astronaut,’ and ‘Superhero.’ Act confused about who you are throughout the night.”
Are you okay ChatGPT? Need to chat?
‘Toilet Paper Shortage’
“Wrap yourself in toilet paper, creating a mummy-like appearance, and carry a sign saying, ‘Toilet Paper Shortage 2020-21′”.
Covid really is living rent free in the head of ChatGPT right now. At least it’s a bit more original than just a straight up mummy I guess.
‘Broke uni student’
“Wear thrift store clothes, carry an empty wallet, and attach ramen noodle packages, instant ramen cups, and empty pizza boxes to your costume.”
What costume? Like seriously no one is gonna need to dress up for this one. I mean, this student already dressed up as the cost of living crisis last year and that was pretty terrifying.
