Soton Uni Professor Stephen Holgate has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours
Four other Soton professors have also received OBEs and MBEs
Multiple Professors at the University of Southampton have been recognised in the 2020 Queen’s British Honours Lists.
Professor Stephen Holgate has been knighted for services to medical research. He is Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology and Honorary Consultant Physician within the University’s Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Southampton NHS. Professor Holgate was “really surprised to receive this honour“.

Professor Mark E Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University said: “I am delighted for Stephen in achieving this much-deserved recognition for the excellent contribution he has made to our understanding and treatment of respiratory and allergic diseases and most recently COVID-19, that has impacted positively so many people in the UK and around the world. He has had an extraordinary career which the University of Southampton benefitted from. I congratulate him on behalf of the university community on this very fitting honour.”
Professor Lucy Yardley has been awarded an OBE. She is the Professor of Health Psychology and a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE). Her research is focused on integrating digital interventions and support for self-management of their health.

Professor Jackie Wahba also received an OBE. She leads the Migration Research for the ESRC Centre for Population Change. Her expertise in international migration and labour markets in developing countries helped her achieve an OBE.

Professor Hywel Morgan and Professor Paul Elkington both receive MBEs after they led the team behind PeRso, the personal respirator rapidly developed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
