Look, it’s honestly OK to sleep with your best friend’s ex

They owe you one

So the inevitable has happened. The person you’ve been flirting with all year has finally broken up with their ex, your best mate. You’ve sent texts you shouldn’t have and have resisted urges you didn’t think you were strong enough to. But here’s your chance, and here’s why it’s okay to finally take it.

Relationships are hard, but break-ups are worse. There’s crying and tears, then chocolate. The only way to get over someone is wait till they move on. Until that point there’s a tingle and burning desire that you might be able to rekindle some dwindling flame. Who better to take on that role than your best mate? Who better to step up and do the deed for you, eliminating any possibility of back-sliding and getting back together when, come, let’s face it, they’re wrong for each other.

Throughout the relationship, you’ve been biting your lip, tossing and turning at night, filled with this desire to take what isn’t yours. And you’ve been a good friend. Because although you’ve spent hours longing for them, and resenting your mate, who cock blocked and clam jammed them before you got in there – you haven’t overstepped the mark. You resisted, you waited, you respected their relationship.

But now is the time to move past those repressed desires, stolen glances and awkward moments. Now is the time to pounce.

Once a relationship is over, it’s unfair of your friend to continue to claim this person as though they’re still their own. They should let them be free, and if they’re going to be free with anyone, why not their best friend who they love and trust and know well? If you’re really best friends they should just let you hook-up anyway. It’s not as if you’re going to be a rebound, it’s not as if you’re stealing your friend’s leftover emotions. Quite the contrary: this is simply a no strings attached situation. Considering you’ve refrained from the slightest of leg grazes in the whole time that the two of them were together, your mate probably owes you one anyway.

So here you are at the break-up, your friend is in bits and can’t quite move on. They’re worried that their ex is feeling sad and miserable, surely as a best-friend all you could do, is go over and – cheer them up. In doing such a gracious deed, no doubt will your friend be thankful and you can even discuss what they’re like bed, a problem shared is a problem halved. So you might have 99 other problems, but they won’t be one.

If anything, it could do your friendship a world of good. In being with the same person you’ll discover more similarities than you would have ever had thought. And obviously only best friends can screw the same person and don’t let it come between them.

When your mate kicks off just tell them: “Get over it” so you can get under it.
