Free education protesters occupy Inox Dine

The Free University of Sheffield are currently occupying SU restaurant Inox Dine, as part of a nationwide movement against tuition fees.
They are not only occupying the overpriced and underused Inox, but hoping to transform it into a ‘place of learning’, opening it up to students and academics and offering workshops throughout the day, as a protest against the ‘neoliberal degradation’ of uni. Socialists from both Hallam and Uni of are taking part in the demonstration.

The movement started around 12pm today and is still continuing, with some protesters even threatening to sleep there. Banners reading “For free education”, “For a living wage” and “Against privatisation” can be seen hung from the windows of the SU.
A statement on the Free University of Sheffield Facebook page said: “We are arguing that education is a universal human right that should not be merely reserved for the wealthy elite, or for those willing to sell themselves to the banks.
“In the UK today we are put off higher education either by the fees, or accept the burden of an amount of debt that you will likely never be able to pay back.
“In order to make this point we have chosen Inox Dine as it is designed purely to generate private profit, and is universally loathed by everyone who even knows it exists. It’s a vanity project which does little more than appeal to a marketisation agenda.”
An observer said: “The restaurant has been put on lockdown. Apparently security staff aren’t letting press in either.”
In a statement released by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Paul White he said: “We understand fee’s are an issue close rightly close to the hearts of students across the UK. However, we cannot condone any activity that causes disruption to our staff and students and impacts on the experience which they rightly expect to receive.”
