Armed police chase cow through Sheffield
Fear hit an all time high in the Sheffield student community on Monday as a wild, highland cow went on the loose.
The cow, who has remained nameless, was believed to have escaped at 15:30 from a field in Woodhouse and proceeded to meander calmly through the streets. Following the unprovoked rampage, armed police units were deployed in a strategic effort to protect the public.

We spoke to Endcliffe resident Tom regarding the drama. “It was awful. As soon as the news started circulating on social media, people ran to the store, stocked up on their non perishable goods and locked their doors. You could have heard a pin drop outside. God only know’s what damage that cow could have caused”
Students were left anxiously monitoring the pursuit of the “beast” through the Manor Castle police Twitter, and praying the courageous cattle ran out of speed before it had the chance to advance up Broomhill and wreck havoc among the student community.Witnesses say people could be seen virtually flocking out of the IC in a bid to get home to safety.
Cow got beef
Google Maps indicates the cow could have taken up to a four mile journey in it’s bold bid for freedom, after escaping from Graves Park and finally being captured on Gleadless Road. Eventually, after a two hour, high pressure chase, it was alleged to have surrendered and climbed happily into it’s owners trailer. No firearms were activated.
Udderly ridiculous
The Tab contacted Sheffield City Council yesterday morning regarding the mental state of the cow at the time and it’s subsequent reintegration back into the cow community, but are yet to receive a response.
The cow is reported to have been unarmed and non aggressive, but it’s self assurance, sass and fearless pursuit of freedom clearly provided a serious threat to the public domain.
Luckily, the cow didn’t make it quite as far as the city centre, but this incident has served as a serious reminder to students of the ever present risks that come with living in the UK’s greenest city. Photo- Kirt Beckett
