Meet Yousef Ghanmi, the Newcastle Uni student who just won Pointless

Film student Yousef Ghanmi beat three other pairs to win the Pointless trophy

Monday night’s episode of the BBC One game show saw Newcastle Uni student, Yousef Ghanmi, get through to the final with friend, Charlie Wetton.

Although they didn’t win the overall jackpot, the pair did take home the coveted Pointless trophy.

20-year-old Yousef, from Lincoln, said it had always been on his bucket list and is a big fan of the show.

The third year Film student told The Newcastle Tab: “The experience on the show was unreal, they treat you so good, we had our own private dressing rooms and they paid for all our travel, putting us up in a hotel in London for two nights.

“On set it’s quite frantic but everyone is incredibly friendly, all the producers and Alexander (Armstrong) too.

“It feels so good to have won the trophy, it was always something I said I wanted to do, so I felt proud that I did as well as I thought I could.”

The episode was filmed back in May 2022 with Alexander Armstrong and Konnie Huq presenting the show.

Yousef and Charlie, a UEA student studying Law, scored an impressive one on two seperate questions, making them the strongest team throughout the game.

Subjects included: American honours, George Orwell characters and city status applicicants in 2022.

Unfortunately the team failed to win the £3,250 jackpot in the final round where they were asked questions on pairs in the Olympics.

Yousef said: “All my worst categories came up, all I wanted was a decent sport category and the one I got was the hardest batch of questions I’ve ever seen on the show.

“Obviously stings a bit to not come away with the money, but think I did myself proud at least.”

When asked what they would’ve done with the money, Yousef said he would have got a huge Pointless tattoo and used the rest to go travelling over summer.

The episode is available on BBC iPlayer now.
