Lancaster Uni celebrates LGBTQ+ History Month
The University announced its theme for 2023 earlier this month
Ariana KubiakLancaster University has announced its plans to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, which takes place throughout the month of February.
The University is taking on the theme of “Behind the Lens”, showcasing the talents and contributions to film and cinema made by notable LGBTQ+ members.
Terry Abbott, Lead of the University’s LGBT Staff Network, has stated the importance of highlighting the achievements of those who have been “misrepresented or misunderstood”.
The library has created a display to showcase this theme, which is located by the Library A Floor Stairwell and will be in place until 28th February. It showcases films with contributions from the LGBTQ+ community, and books suggested by students and staff.
The Progress Pride flag will be seen at the top of Bigforth Drive on the 15th, 16th, and 17th February to celebrate the LGBTQ&A: Allyship and Parenting Event, and again on the 27th and 28th February to align with the closing of LGBT+ History Month.

On 17th February, the LUSU LGBTQ+ Student Forum will be holding a Grizedale and Sugar takeover for “The big queer night out”. Information for the event can be found on their Instagram.
Colleges will also be hosting their own events to join the celebration, such as film screening and badge-making.
Speaking on LGBT+ History Month, Abbott stated, “It enables marginalised communities to see themselves represented and helps others to learn about people different from themselves.”
