Netflix has doc about the Menendez brothers coming next month and they tell their own story

30 years after the murders of their parents, the Menendez brothers are set to tell their own story in a documentary on Netflix. Right now, everyone is hooked on Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, but now a documentary version of the case is coming too.

Lyle and Erik’s parents were José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. They were killed in their Beverly Hills home on August 20th, 1989. In March 1990, the Menendez brothers were arrested for their parents’ murders and placed on trial. They were found guilty, and have been in prison ever since.

Now, as well as the dramatised series created by Ryan Murphy, Netflix has a documentary film about the brothers’ case coming next month.

The Menendez Brothers will be released on Netflix in October

In a new documentary titled The Menendez Brothers, director Alejandro Hartmann unpacks decades of material surrounding the crime and the subsequent trial. For the first time ever, the brothers themselves provide all-new audio interviews.

In the trailer for the documentary, the brothers can be heard saying: “Everyone asks why we killed our parents, maybe now, people can understand the truth.” The brothers provide audio in calls made to Netflix from the Donovan Correctional Facility, where they are currently serving life sentences.

This will be the first time in 30 years that the brothers have told their own story in this way. “What happened that night is very well known,” one of the brothers says. “But so much hasn’t been told. There was a media spectacle from the beginning, so we were not the ones who told the story of our life. We looked like the perfect family, but behind the walls something very wrong was happening.”

Erik and Lyle Menendez were both interviewed for the film, and it also features new interviews with their cousin Diane Vander Molen, and prosecutor Pamela Bozanich.
