Listed: Every single thing Lyle and Erik Menendez bought in $700k spree before their arrest
Lyle spent over half a million dollars buying a restaurant
During the trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez, before they were found guilty of killing their parents, the defence argued a spree they had with family cash proved their motive was money.
Lyle and Erik Menendez killed their parents José and Kitty after years of alleged abuse. Their father José was a hugely successful music producer and at the time of his death, the entertainment executive was worth around $14million.
Following the murders, as shown in the Netflix series about them, the brothers did go out and splash the family cash, believing it would be their inheritance. This was despite their father threatening to write them out the will, and the risk of being caught and having hefty legal bills hanging over them.
Dominick Dunne, who featured in the Netflix series Monsters as a Vanity Fair journalist, wrote about the spree Lyle and Erik Menendez had after killing their parents, and listed what was said they spent the cash on. It’s been estimated their spree was worth upwards of $700k.
Lyle and Erik Menendez spent $700k before being arrested, here’s what on:
• Lyle bought a $60k Porsche 911 Carrera, to replace a car his father got him that he didn’t like
• Erik also bought a car, a Jeep Wrangler to replace his Ford Mustang
• Lyle bought $40k worth of clothes
• Lyle bought a $15k Rolex watch
• Erik hired a $50k per year tennis coach
• Lyle spent $550k buying an actual restaurant, a cafeteria-style eatery he called Mr Buffalo’s
• Erik invested $40k in a rock concert at the Palladium, but it was a con so he lost the full amount
