Blake Lively cruelly compared Leighton Meester to a ‘monkey’ in resurfaced interview
When her Gossip Girl co-stars didn’t laugh Blake yelled, ‘c’mon it was a joke! Lord have mercy!’
If you thought the awful interviews Blake Lively is doing for It Ends With Us are a new thing, just wait until you see this awful resurfaced interview of her and Leighton Meester.
You might have thought the Gossip Girl co-stars were besties but the truth couldn’t be more different, and if someone compared me to a monkey I wouldn’t be their number one fan either. The resurfaced interview clip between Blake Lively and Leighton Meester recently went viral on TikTok, with people being shocked at how rude Blake was being.
@thedisasterguru Probably not a good idea to call your coworkers monkeys and look at #leightonmeester lol. #blakelively #gossipgirl #thisisus For context – she is talking about things they made the creators of Gossip Girl promise her if she agreed to do a tv show. One of them was no monkeys.
In the resurfaced interview, Blake Lively is doing a panel discussion with Leighton Meester and the rest of the Gossip Girl cast at Paleyfest in 2008. She was revealing the “promises” the Gossip Girls creators made her to make sure she’d appear in the show as Serena.
She explained that in the books Chuck Bass has a pet monkey, something she wasn’t keen on, so admitted she made them promise there would be “no pet monkey.” She continued: “Chuck has a pet monkey with coordinating outfits. And I was like, ‘I would love to be part of the show but I can’t act with a monkey.'”
She then pointed directly to Leighton and joked: “Well, I got a few of them.” Whilst the audience laughed, Leighton looked upset at the comment whilst Chace Crawford and Penn Badgley awkwardly looked at the floor. When none of her co-stars laughed, she exclaimed: “C’mon it was a joke! Lord have mercy!”

It seems throughout filming for Gossip Girl, Leighton and Blake didn’t get along very well, with New York Magazine reporting they “avoided each other like the plague.” In response Blake Lively’s publicist put out a not exactly convincing statement, saying: “Blake and Leighton have never been best friends, and never professed to be…Blake goes to work, does her job, and goes home.”
The show’s executive producer, Joshua Safran, was pretty honest about their lack of closeness on set, telling Vanity Fair: “Blake and Leighton were not friends. They were friendly, but they were not friends like Serena and Blair. Yet the second they’d be on set together, it’s as if they were.”
And no, neither of them follow each other on Instagram, despite them following everyone else in the cast… Yikes.
