Here’s why Seasmoke chose Addam of Hull to be his rider in House of the Dragon

He’s got a thing for fine men

During the most recent episode of House of the Dragon, Addam of Hull is practically chased down by the dragon Seasmoke who decided he wanted Addam to be his rider. After Ser Steffon Darklyn was faked out by Seasmoke and left completely charred, Addam was understandably terrified when Seasmoke started gunning for him on the beach.

Usually, dragonriders pick the dragon they want to bond with, but in this case, Seasmoke was the one who picked his rider. But out of all the possible options, why exactly did Seasmoke pick Addam of Hull in House of the Dragon? let’s find out!

Addam is the secret son of Corlys Valyrian and in the books, he has silver hair and purple eyes. Because of this, he is able to ride dragons as a result of his heritage.

However, there is another reason why Seasmoke chose him and it’s because of his relation to the dragon’s previous rider, Laenor. Seasmoke and Laenor shared a strong bond and in a previous House of the Dragon episode, we see how sad he’s been since Laenor’s disappearance.

Rhaenyra and Mysaria discuss how Laenor’s dragon Seasmoke is behaving very differently from usual and acting a lot more vertically and frantic. Mysaria asks why the dragon might be behaving oddly, with Rhaenyra replying: “Seasmoke – my late Lord husband’s dragon. He’s grown restless of late. We can’t know why.” Mysaria replies: “Maybe he’s lonely.”

As Addam of Hull is technically Laenor’s half-brother it might be that Seasmoke was able to smell and trust him. Alternatively, some fans think that Seasmoke heartbreakingly mistook Addam to be Laenor since the two look so similar.
