MAFS Australia 2024 to star a same-sex couple since the passing of marriage equality laws
The act gave same-sex couples the same right to marry as heterosexual couples
Married at First Sight Australia 2024 will star a same-sex couple for the first time since the country’s marriage equality law was passed back in 2017.
Two men will be getting ‘married’ for the first time since the passing of the Marriage Act in 2017, according to Daily Mail Australia. The amendment of the federal Marriage Act in December 2017 allowed same-sex couples the same right to marry as heterosexual couples.
“It’s important to get this right. We’re not just adding diversity for the sake of it, but to genuinely represent the many colours of love,” an insider told the publication.
A spokesperson for Channel Nine previously told Daily Mail Australia that a same-sex couple hadn’t been included on MAFS Australia due to a limited number of applications.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t feel there was a good enough match, and we didn’t want to include a gay couple just for the sake of appearances,” they said.
In 2020, the MAFS Australia experiment featured its first lesbian couple, but there hasn’t been a same-sex couple since then. The couple didn’t make it out of the experiment following a series of challenges during the experiment.
Prior to the legalisation of gay marriage in Australia, MAFS Australia’s first gay couple was Craig and Andy. However, their relationship didn’t make it outside of the experiment.
There are currently two rumoured contestants for MAFS Australia 2024. Food blooger Lauren Dunn is said to be joining the cast as well as Mitch Eynaud’s brother, Jayden.
