Why was Katy Perry at the Coronation? An investigation into Katy Perry and King Charles bizarre friendship.

Erm, are Katy Perry and King Charles mates? An investigation into their bizarre friendship

I am so confused rn

The Coronation gave us some great memes, some unhinged merch, and a fuck tonne of rain. But the thing no one could escape was the fact that, for some reason, Katy Perry was there. No, not some fancy Lady Katy Perrington of Wherever – the actual Katy Perry, who sings California Gurls and is in the Just Eat advert. So why was Katy Perry at the Coronation, and are she and King Charles friends?

When she arrived at the Coronation Katy Perry couldn’t find her seat for ages, before tweeting to let us all know she’d managed to locate it. Her outfit was pretty bloody iconic though.

And people questioned how Charles could possibly know Katy Perry – and if he’d even know the words to any of her songs:

It turns out Katy Perry and Charles have known each other for quite a while – here’s everything you need to know about their bizarre friendship:

Katy Perry reportedly first met Charles and Camilla in 2019, where she was announced as an ambassador for the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund for India. At the time however, this move was criticised by some as Katy is “neither British nor Asian”, as one Guardian article put it.

The charity was set up in 2007 by Charles and “a group of British Asian business leaders, to tackle widespread poverty, inequality and injustice in South Asia”.

In a speech, Charles said: “Given Katy’s long-standing commitment to charitable causes around the world, I’m delighted to be announcing that she has most generously agreed to become an ambassador for the British Asian Trust’s children’s protection fund for India. I could hardly be more grateful to Katy for agreeing to take on this vital role.”

At the event, Katy reportedly called him a “very kind soul” who “talks to his plants” and “asked me if I could sing to his plants”. Oooookay then.

That same year, Katy posted a full-on Instagram grid post for Charles’ birthday, wishing him a “Happiest 71st His Royal Highness Prince Charles”.

She also spoke about when they met, saying: “It was a pleasure spending a little time with you and many brilliant Indian minds looking for incredible solutions to making India a more wonderful place through your organisation”.

Last week, Katy Petty told Extra TV she would be staying at actual Windsor Castle ahead of the Coronation and her performance at the concert the next day – where she performed along with the likes of Take That and Lionel Ritchie. She said her invitation “was very regal. It was like a cursive I have never seen [before]… I loved it.”

She said it was an “honour” to perform and said: “I’m really excited… I might be posting a lot because I’m gonna be in a castle, for real. This is wild.”

Performing at the Coronation concert, Katy Perry dedicated her song Firework to Charles, because why the hell not. She said: “I would like to dedicate this next song to the King and to all the work we get to do together for the British Asian Trust, and the Children’s Protection Fund. Thank you for bringing out the firework in so many other people.”
