Everything you need to know about Educating Yorkshire’s newly-qualified teacher Josh Geary
He's definitely the school favourite
Educating Yorkshire introduced us to a newly-qualified teacher, Josh Geary, and he’s already having it tough in the classroom. His pupils say he’s a “human calculator who’s sick at maths,” but he has been struggling to find any part of his new role fun, as it’s so challenging.
Josh is only 22 and highly-regarded by the Thornhill Academy headteacher, Matthew Burton. He actually previously worked at Cannon Hall Farm during the holidays, before his teacher training, which is where several of the people watching the show recognise him from.
Before he even realised he wanted to be a teacher, he spent a lot of his days working at the visitor attraction and working farm park near Barnsley, West Yorkshire. Josh has featured on some videos showing him laying out pumpkins ahead of the autumnal season.
He currently teaches maths but isn’t on the list of teachers on the official school website. The headteacher wrote on X: “Mr Geary is front and centre this evening on #EducatingYorkshire. He’s a brilliant young teacher at the start of his career. Over to you, Mr Geary!”
Before joining the school, Mr Geary received his secondary maths degree with QTS at Edge Hill University in 2024. He’s based in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and has the iconic instructions of, “Voices off, hands up,” during his Thornhill Academy lessons.
Unfortunately, he’s got to teach maths last thing on a Friday, and quite literally nobody wants that. His boss also said: “He’s a brilliant chap and I’m privileged to work with him. We’ll look after him and make sure that he’s looking after himself too. Be nice, work hard.”

There’s a national teacher shortage on the show, and as a result, his co-workers are trying to help him find joy in his new teaching job. Since he starred on the show, students are saying he “was actually such a good teacher” and that they “loved him”.
