All the Drag Race stars who slammed RuPaul’s past controversial comments on trans people
RuPaul has since apologised for his comments
RuPaul was slammed for his comments on trans people by multiple Drag Race stars, and while he’s apologised for them, multiple queens were not willing to stay silent after the controversial statements were made by the show’s host back in 2018.
Monica Beverly Hillz
Monica Beverly Hillz wasn’t happy about RuPaul’s comments about trans people in 2018, when Ru said she’d “probably not” allow trans women to compete. She told The Washington Post, “I’m a trans woman and a drag queen. Despite what RuPaul says, you can be both.”
RuPaul, who has since apologised for his comments, said, “Drag loses its sense of danger and its sense of irony once it’s not men doing it.” Monica “wasn’t surprised” to read RuPaul’s comments, but said, “I’m very grateful to have been given the platform to compete.”
Sasha Velour
She continued: “From the second there was drag, trans people were doing it. And when cis women started being allowed in theatres, then cis women doing drag was part of theatre. Drag is literally so ancient that it predates modern understanding of gender, of transness.”
Peppermint
RuPaul said, “Peppermint didn’t get breast implants until after she left our show. You can identify as a woman and say you’re transitioning, but it changes once you start changing your body. It changes the whole concept of what we’re doing.”
In response, Peppermint hit back with, “No one has the ability or the right to define your womanhood but you. Women should not be defined by what surgeries they have or haven’t had. Gay men do not own the idea of gender performance.”
