Inside the 1000-Lb Sisters’ wild five-year transformation journey
They're now literally unrecognisable
When 1000-Lb Sisters first hit TLC screens back in 2020, viewers were immediately hooked by the chaotic, candid, and often emotional lives of Tammy and Amy Slaton. The Kentucky-born sisters weighed a combined 1000lbs at the start of the series, hence the name, and were battling both physical health issues and emotional struggles in their mission to reclaim their lives.
Since then, they’ve had weight loss surgery, endured hospital visits, welcomed babies, been through breakups, and tragic loss. These days, they’re almost unrecognisable. And now, in 2025, the Slaton sisters have collectively lost close to 700lbs. Their transformation has been one of the most jaw-dropping in reality TV history.
Here’s everything you need to know about their journey, from the highs, the lows, and the viral moments in between.
Where the 1000-Lb Sisters started
When we first met the Slaton sisters in 2020, Amy weighed 406lbs, while Tammy tipped the scales at over 600lbs, per People. Their goal? Qualify for bariatric surgery and finally gain control over their health.
Amy, who had always been the more mobile and independent of the two, managed to qualify for weight loss surgery in the very first season. Tammy, on the other hand, struggled to meet her goals and faced repeated setbacks, including emotional eating and a lack of physical activity.
Still, fans were immediately invested. Their dynamic, a blend of tough love, outrageous humour, and raw vulnerability, was unlike anything else on reality TV.
Amy’s transformation journey
After undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2019, Amy made impressive progress. By 2023, she had lost over 176lbs and shocked fans again when she announced she was pregnant, something doctors had previously warned against so soon after surgery.
Amy went on to give birth to two sons: Gage in 2020 and Glenn in 2022. Motherhood brought its own set of challenges, but Amy remained focused on staying healthy for her kids. While her weight fluctuated slightly during and after pregnancy, she maintained a far healthier lifestyle than pre-surgery.
As of her latest updates, Amy has lost almost 180lbs in total since the show began, and she’s still going.
Tammy also qualified for surgery
Tammy’s journey was far more turbulent. For multiple seasons, she failed to meet weight loss goals and was frequently hospitalised. At her heaviest, she reportedly weighed in at over 720lbs and required a trach tube after a major health scare.
After hitting rock bottom, Tammy finally checked herself into a food addiction rehab centre in 2021, but she left early.
The real transformation began when the reality TV star enrolled at an Ohio weight loss facility in 2022.
In a shock twist no one saw coming, Tammy not only committed to her program, she thrived. She stuck with it for over a year, lost enough weight to qualify for surgery, and underwent the procedure in 2022.
By the end of 2023, she had shed over 440lbs, and the world took notice. Viral TikToks showed a happier, and far more mobile Tammy walking, dancing, and living an independent life. She even got married to fellow rehab resident Caleb Willingham in 2022, but he sadly passed away in 2023 at the age of 40.
The sisters lost around 700lbs
Together, Amy and Tammy have now lost almost 700lbs, an achievement few thought possible when the show first aired. From barely being able to walk to fitting in car seats and shopping at regular clothing stores, the sisters have completely flipped their lives around.
Their journey hasn’t been perfect, they’ve had moments of backsliding, emotional breakdowns, and public drama, but their resilience has been undeniable.

As of mid-2025, Tammy is continuing to maintain her new lifestyle, embracing her newfound independence, and she got engaged to Andrea Dalton in June 2025. Amy has seemingly adjusted to life as a single mum following her split from husband Michael, and focusing on raising her boys while staying healthy. She’s also debuted a new relationship on IG.
These days, people are seeing an entirely different version of the sisters, still funny, still messy, but undeniably transformed.
Folks often take to their social media posts to praise their progress, writing: “Tammy living her best life, something that she’s deserved for a long time, you go girl!”
Whether you’ve followed them from day one or are just catching up now, one thing’s for sure: the Slaton sisters are no longer defined by the scale. They’ve rewritten their own story!
