Love Island has decreased in popularity by a whopping 36 percent, a recent study shows. Having watched the dating show since 2019, it’s slowly become more controversial, and it’s obvious why.
Although Love Island just received its highest viewing figures in two years, its popularity has dwindled since its launch in 2015. Back then, cancel culture and body positivity were not as prominent as today.
Love Island is nowhere near as popular
Love Island has decreased in viewing figures by 36 percent since 2015, a study by CyberGhost VPN shows, with the average IMDb rating continuing to fall over the last few seasons.
In fact, the most recent series (season 10) received an average score of just 4.1 on IMDb, while season 1, which aired in 2015, received a fairly higher average series rating of 6.5 on IMDb.
Season two dropped to a rating of 5.8, but went back up to 6.3 by the third season. But seasons five to seven kept at least above a 6, before dropping gradually since season 8.
Highest viewing figures in 2 years
From bringing in reality TV stars like Joey Essex, to launching an All Stars spin-off, Love Island is still hugely popular. It’s received a staggering 44,230,000 searches on Google over the past year.
A total of 2.2 million people across multiple devices watched the first episode on June 4, marking the highest launch audience since summer 2022, matching islanders on boyfriend-girlfriend potential.
Last year’s summer series drew in 1.3 million people, just above half the audience that had tuned in for the previous year. The show has become quite controversial for those advocating for body positivity.
Why it’s gone down in popularity
Having watched Love Island ever since Molly Mae and Tommy Fury got together in 2019, coming second, I don’t believe the drama has been hitting in quite the same way, not to mention the rise of influencers.
It seems as though the villa is full of inspiring influencers rather than people who genuinely want to find love. Dating apps are so advanced these days that perhaps they should admit they just want fame.
To be fair, credit is due, because the likes of Molly Mae claimed she didn’t think she’d find someone, but went on to have a baby with him and get engaged. But I think we’d all admit they’re a rarity.
Another reason for the popularity decrease is down to body positivity. With all shapes and sizes showing their bikini-clad bodies on Instagram, it’s quite triggering to see unrealistic bodies that all look the same.
