Are you an aspiring writer or social media creator? The Durham Tab wants you!

Come along to our open meeting on Wednesday 7th October at 7:30pm at The Library

Have you ever thought about student journalism – or maybe wanted to write about an experience you’ve had in Durham? Or have you fallen in love with the idea of being a magazine journalist after one too many romcoms? Or maybe you’re more interested in making TikToks and Instagram Reels, finding the latest Durham gossip, or reporting on what’s happening inside and outside the university? Either way, The Durham Tab wants you. Come along to our open meeting and first social on Wednesday 7th October at 7:30pm in The Library (the bar, not the Billy B. Though that would be cool).

We’re looking for new writers and social media content creators to join our team. You don’t need any previous journalism experience – just a good idea, a strong opinion, or an unhealthy amount of time spent scrolling.

So, what is The Durham Tab?

The Durham Tab is part of The Tab, a student news platform with local sites at universities across the UK, as well as a national team based in London. Our Durham team covers everything from campus news and student issues to nightlife, trends, guides and the stories everyone’s talking about. Basically, if Durham students care about it, we want to hear about it. And you don’t have to be a journalism student to get involved. In fact, you don’t even have to have written an article before.

Why should you join?

Writing for The Durham Tab is a pretty good way to escape the classic student CV experience of having teamwork and communication skills as your only evidence of doing anything outside your degree. It’s a chance to build up your CV, meet people across Durham, and get your work in front of a real student audience. Whether you want to write about university news, nightlife, student life, culture, or something completely ridiculous, there’s room for everyone. You’ll get the chance to pitch your own ideas, take on commissions, try out different types of content and work with our editors to get your stories published.

And if you feel like more of a social media expert? We’re also looking for people who know what’s trending before everyone else does. Prefer being behind the camera? There are opportunities to get involved with video and TikTok content too.

You’ll also get the opportunity to meet other students who are equally keen to get involved, with meetings and socials throughout the year. And trust me, they’re always pretty good.

And it all starts here. Remember, it’sWednesday 7th October (tomorrow) at 7:30pm in The Library Bar. It’s a chance to meet the team, find out what we do, and have a chat with other students who might be thinking about getting involved. No experience, portfolio or perfectly polished pitch required.

If you can’t make the meeting, you can still get involved – just follow @thedurhamtab on Instagram and @thetabdurham on TikTok to keep up with what we’re doing, and join our upcoming Whatsapp group to keep track of regular new story and video commissions.
