The latest we know about Christa Pike’s condition in hospital, one day after failed lethal injection

She has been left with ‘blistering and burning’ on her arm

It’s now been over a day since the lethal injection execution of Christa Pike failed, and she remains in a critical condition in hospital. Pike was set to be the first woman in Tennessee to be executed in over 200 years, but despite two shots of the injection being administered, she survived.

Now 50-year-old Pike was sentenced to death on March 30th 1996, after torturing and killing her classmate in a jealous rage because she thought she was attempting to “steal” her boyfriend at the time, Tadaryl Shipp.

Pike was 18 at the time, and alongside a then 17-year-old Shipp, she lured 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer into a woods. They beat her for 30 minutes, carved a pentagram into her chest and forehead and killed her by hitting her head with a large piece of asphalt. They both confessed to the killing, and were convicted of first-degree murder.

After her execution, at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, failed, Christa Pike was rushed to hospital.

What condition is Christa Pike in now?

Christa Pike was rushed to hospital after she survived her execution attempt, where she is “being provided life-saving measures”.

During a news conference last night, over 24 hours on from what happened, her lawyers confirmed she is alive, but in a critical condition and receiving care. Randall Spivey, one of her lawyers, said her current prognosis is unclear.

“We don’t have a sense of her prognosis or much update on her health at the moment,” Spivey said. “But we know she is alive right now.”

Speaking of witnessing the execution attempt, Spivey added he is “haunted by last night” and said he counted at least seven needles used in Pike’s left arm alone, “one of which appeared to be bent when it was pulled from her arm after an unsuccessful attempt.”

As per NBC, he said her arm had turned purple, and now there is “blistering and burning around the sites of the injection.”

It’s been reported that assuming she survives, the state of Tennessee could attempt to execute her for a second time at a later date.
