Photos show what Lizzie Borden’s maid Bridget looked like in real life after Netflix’s Monster

Bridget Sullivan is one of the key characters in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the Borden family’s ruthless maid who constantly changes her hair colour and answers back, but that doesn’t exactly match up with real life. 

The real-life Bridget was actually just a maid. She wasn’t Lizzie’s lover, and she didn’t plot to kill Andrew and Abby. Bridget immigrated from Ireland and worked for the Borden family for three years, during which time she really just kept herself to herself. And she didn’t change her hair colour either. 

Here is a timeline of real-life photos that show what she actually looked like over the years, because Monster wasn’t very accurate at all.

This photo is believed to have been taken in 1982, the same year as the Borden murders. It’s the only photo of her during her time in Fall River, Massachusetts, and shows the housemaid when she was around 26 years old. Here, she is wearing a formal portrait dress, not the typical clothes she wore to work as a maid, which included a dust cap.

Here, Bridget is pictured alongside her husband John M. Sullivan outside their home in Anaconda, Montana. It was likely taken in the 1930s or early 1940s, decades after the Borden murders. It’s not clear exactly what she was doing in the years after she left Fall River, but she eventually settled in Montana and lived there until she died in 1948.

Bridget’s husband’s grandniece, Diana Porter, told The Herald News in 2012 that “there’s a gap of about a dozen years” where they don’t know what Sullivan was doing. The family speculates that she went back to Ireland, but it’s not clear how she ended up in Montana. She never had any children, and is buried in Anaconda.
