Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story star breaks down Bridget’s hidden motivations

Bridget Sullivan (aka Maggie) is a huge character in Netflix’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. Although historians don’t know much about the real Bridget Sullivan, the Netflix show promotes her to Lizzie’s girlfriend and co-conspirator. However, Bridget’s motivations in Monster are quite mysterious. Is she scheming to get the Borden family’s money? Is she genuinely in love with Lizzie? Does she wreck this family out of vengeance for having to do too much dusting? Is she just that fond of cherry juice? 

Vicky Krieps, the actor who portrays Bridget in Monster, has gone into depth about Bridget’s plan, and what her motivations were.  

She told The Wrap: “I think Bridget is one of those characters that remains mysterious until the end. The way [Monster] was written, you could have easily read it like that – that she is the big manipulator, that she is the one who’s manipulating Lizzie, the father, [that she] wants to make money, talks everyone into it.

“I didn’t feel that simple, straight manipulation thing. I was – I don’t know why – I felt like there’s much more honesty and actual feeling, and I think she actually fell in love with Lizzie, and I think she actually honestly hates this unfairness of the world that she’s living in.”

Vicky feels Bridget morphed into a more complex character while the show was being made.

“Through and because of society [she] became a player,” Vicky continued, “that’s why she’s so modern. She’s a woman who is struggling and surviving, but at the same time, became a player instead of becoming someone who’s only suffering. So, I think that’s why the manipulation changed throughout making this season, and why now Bridget or Maggie has become this question mark.
