How to spot a Liverpool fresher

Cut them some slack, we’ve all been there

Being a Liverpool fresher is a universal experience that we all inevitably look back on and shudder. You can tell exactly who they are before they even open their mouths. From big friendship groups to confused map reading, here’s a tell tale list of things that make you stand out as a fresher so you can avoid them at all costs. Save yourself the future embarrassment.

Wearing lanyards like medals

Nothing says fresher quite like a student ID hanging proudly around your neck. Walking on campus to or going to Tesco, they’re always wearing a lanyard. Going to the pub? Probably still wearing a lanyard.

The society pub crawls

Nothing screams first year like a crowd of people in swimming caps and face paint. It is also the prime time to realise you definitely have not worked out your drinking limits yet. We’ve all been there and done that.

Campus map readers

Another dead give away is people using the university map. You will see them standing in the middle of the pavement, phone twisting in all directions trying to work out which way to walk. There will also always be one person who insists they know where they are going and causes everyone to be ten minutes late to the lecture. Cannon event.

The shot drinkers

Second and third year is for realising a pint in a pub is far more enjoyable than treating a Monday night like a rave in Ibiza.

If they are not doing shots their order will likely be double vodka anything or a pitcher which is 70% ice. The idea of not drinking to get drunk doesn’t exist to them.

Everyday is a Friday night

The first few weeks of university operate on the assumption that any day of the week has potential to be a night out. Had a long day? Club. Feeling homesick? Pub, then club. Hungover? Hair of the dog.

Thinking you know everyone

Freshers are great at collecting people from anywhere and everywhere. Someone they bumped into in Tesco is suddenly in their flat for pres and their friend’s flatmate is their new bestie. Honestly though, first year is the time to chat to everyone!

After a few weeks, you will realise you are not getting lost all the time and that the lanyard looks really uncool. Then half way through the year, something in your brain chemistry will change. You then discover that you absolutely do not need to go out 4 times a week and be the most black out drunk at the function.

And then you will judge everyone who was like you next september!
