Here are eight Halloween costumes that scream ‘Exetah’
Outfits fuelled by last-minute panic and daddy’s card
Halloween is creeping up fast, and most Exeter students are asking themselves the same question: How do I come up with a costume that’s both unique and perfectly niche?
Despite our best efforts, most of us will end up in one of two camps – the classic-but-cute fits everyone wears every year, or the TikTok-inspired outfit that turns out to be not quite as original as we thought.
So whether you’re looking for some last-minute inspiration or realising your ‘hidden gem’ idea isn’t so hidden after all, here are eight Halloween costumes that absolutely scream “Exetah”.
1. Ladybug
With polka dots coming back in style for the first time since our childhoods, what could be a more perfect outfit to put to use all of your impulse buys?
A ladybug is a cute and fun outfit that may be easier to put together than you expect. Grab a red top and a black skirt, and paint yourself dotty (although these aren’t guaranteed to last the night).
2. Peaky Blinders
Peaky Blinders may as well be cosplaying the average Exeter student, you’re just as likely to see this outfit in Timepiece as you are to see it in Forum.
With the perfect opportunity to reuse your Race’s outfit, your Peaky Blinders outfit will be so slick it’s criminal. Get ready to turn your attitude to 100% Tommy Shelby.
3. Paddington

The cutest British icon can turn you into the best dressed at your Halloween party! Just throw together your best navy pieces and get a red hat, with some face paint to finish up the look – you’re guaranteed to have everyone stuck on you like jam.
4. Deer
You might not scare anyone, but people are guaranteed to fawn over you all night. With a brown themed outfit and eyeliner to mimic those wide, innocent eyes, you’ve got a look that’s both Disney and dangerously alluring. Beware: The night may end with you looking like a deer in headlights.
5. Sailor
Crisp linens, sailor stripes, and a dangerous relationship with rum – sounds like just about any Exeter student on a Wednesday night.
Although you’re not conquering the seven seas, you’ll still be making waves amongst your friends. Are you going to a lecture or to your favourite club? The fit says Forum Hill, but the energy says top top dance floor.
6. Pirate
Forget the treasure, the real gold is this outfit. With some ruffles, gold, and your favourite autumnal boots, you’re bound to be the X that marks the spot.
This outfit isn’t far from what you’d wear on TP Wednesday. It’s the perfect outfit for those who already have a thing for stripes, boots, and questionable decision-making after 10pm.
7. Cowgirl/Cowboy
Put to use your best cowboy boots and the cowboy hat you’ve no doubt acquired from a night of Batty Bingo, this is definitely not your first rodeo.
With some fun denims and your best leather, you could be wearing this outfit for a cute brunch by the quay as much as for the Fever dance floor.
8. Spy
For those who have mastered the art of disappearing from 9:30am lectures, this spy look is just another mission.
Combine an all black outfit with a trench coat you or someone you know definitely owns, and you’re ready to blend in or stand out – depending on how many opps turn up to the same event.
