Erm, these 10 UK unis are still asking their students for more than £14 million of unpaid costs

Uh, UK unis still want their students and recent grads to cough up more than £486 million of unpaid private costs.

At least 180,000 uni students and recent grads owe money to their unis for private fees – that includes accommodation costs, fines and library penalties, but not tuition fees. Yikes.

The bank Vanquis asked 148 UK unis how many students owed them money. The results are pretty alarming. Students and grads who are in debt to their unis owe on average £2,650.

Several of the unis where pupils end up in debt are in cities where rents for students are growing at an alarming rate. – such as Canterbury and London. Two unis are in Glasgow alone. Students typically have to spend way more on rent there than at most other cities with unis.

The Russell Group uni which students are in the most debt is Queen Mary University of London. Their pupils and recent alumni shockingly owe nearly £20 million.

So, here are the 10 UK unis which students and recent grads owe the most money for unpaid private costs, according to Vanquis. 71 UK unis didn’t provide data – so it’s possible that at some unis, students owe even more money than this.

10. University of Westminster
