ChatGPT is about to allow ‘erotica’ and now the CEO explains why after huge backlash

Adult content is coming and the app is going to ‘safely remove restrictions’

ChatGPT is about to allow adult content and ‘erotica’ – which is quite a terrifying and sobering thought for all of us. As AI creeps more and more into our lives, it’s a bit scary knowing that not only will you be able to ask AI to do practically anything for you – you can now ask it to make content that previously you could not. This is because ChatGPT is relaxing safety restrictions for the app if you’re age verified and it can create you adult content including that of the horny variety. This is traumatising news, and obviously ChatGPT has received a lot of backlash for the news erotica will be coming to the AI service – its CEO, Sam Altman, has now released a statement.

I’m not sure this helped matters

CEO Sam Altman wrote about the update on Twitter, saying “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

“Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases. In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!).

“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing). In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

When someone quite rightly asked why does any “adult” changes, where users would like to not be patronised, end up becoming porny and featuring erotica, CEO Sam Altman simply said of the ChatGPT update “You won’t get it unless you ask for it.” Great, thanks, but some of us are uncomfortable that it’s happening at all, mate!

People have called out the hypocrisy based on previous things the CEO has said

In a resurfaced clip, Altman said “There is a lot of short term stuff we could do that would really juice growth or revenue and be really misaligned with that long term goal. I’m proud of the company how little we get distracted by that, but sometimes we do get tempted.”

When asked for a specific example, he says “Well we haven’t put a sexbot avatar in ChatGPT yet.”
