Iryna Zarutska’s co-workers reveal sweet way they’re keeping her memory alive in tragic tribute
‘Our hearts are heavy with grief’
After Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was killed in an unprovoked act of violence in Charlotte, North Carolina, last month, tributes from those close to her have poured in. The man responsible, Decarlos Brown Jr, is now facing the death penalty.
“We are heartbroken beyond words. Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way,” her family said in a statement issued by their lawyer. “No family should have to go through this.”
Similarly, her uncle said she was the “glue” that held the family together, adding: “She was just a very, very caring person. She loved to help people.”
Amidst responses from family members, neighbours, and Iryna’s boyfriend, her place of work, Zeppedies Pizzeria, issued a response.

What did Zeppedies Pizzeria say about Iryna Zarutska?
On the evening of August 22, Iryna Zarutska had been working at Zeppedies Pizzeria when she boarded the bus home. Still dressed in her uniform, she sat down on the bus in front of the man who would kill her just “four-and-a-half minutes” into the journey.
In a statement posted to its Facebook account, Zeppedies Pizzeria employees addressed Iryna Zarutska’s murder and the touching way they’re keeping her memory alive.
“Recently, our Zepeddie’s family suffered a tremendous loss. We lost not only an incredible employee but a true friend. Our dear Iryna left this world far too soon, and our hearts are heavy with grief,” they said.

“Since her passing, we have kept a candle burning in her memory-a small reminder of the warmth, kindness, and light she brought into our lives every single day. We are so grateful for the love, support, and prayers we’ve received during this difficult time.”
Her co-workers said they are still processing what they described as a “tragedy”, adding: “We ask for your understanding and respect for our team as we try to find peace. Iryna, we miss you more than words can say. You will forever be in our hearts.”
