Perrie Edwards reveals ‘toxic’ Zayn Malik relationship caused ‘issues’ after they broke up

She was ‘done with men forever’

Perrie Edwards has opened up about her very public relationship with Zayn Malik for the first time in years, and she spoke about how hard the aftermath was for her after they split.

The pair dated from 2012 to 2015 after meeting on The X Factor. In a new interview on Paul C. Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast, she described their relationship as “toxic”.

Even when Perrie and Zayn broke up, she still struggled with the toxic traits and it caused big issues with her current partner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the early days of them dating. They are now engaged and have a three-year-old son together, Axel.

“At the time I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, ‘Oh, this is how it’s supposed to feel a little bit toxic in some ways,” she said.

“This is probably normal, right? And then when I became single, I was almost thinking like, I never ever want to go through that again. I didn’t even want to meet anybody. I was like, that’s me done. I don’t think I could bear that pain.

“The pain of heartbreak is so grim that I remember thinking, I’m done with men forever. That’s me done. And then when I met Alex, I had so many issues in our relationship at the beginning that I probably didn’t notice at the time. But now reflecting back, I’m thinking, “Oh, that probably wasn’t it it wasn’t good.”

Perrie said at the start of their relationship, she would “handle things differently with Alex” and he would “come at it with such a level head” that it would throw her off, because she wasn’t used to being in a healthy relationship with good communication.

“Like, little things might happen, and I’d think, ‘Oh, now he’s going to kick off, he’s not going to like this.’ And I’d be like, ‘Oh, this happened’. And he’d be like, ‘Alright’ and it would throw me. He’s very mature. He’s very laid back. He’s very level-headed. He’s not the type to get mad or get angry or get funny about things.”
