Perrie Edwards reveals how the Little Mix girls really felt about her dating Zayn Malik
She described their relationship as ‘toxic’
In an interview with Paul C Brunson, Perrie Edwards has revealed how her Little Mix bandmates felt about her and Zayn Malik’s relationship at the time.
Little Mix and One Direction competed in the same season of X Factor, with Little Mix winning the show and One Direction finishing third. She talked about the bond the girls shared with One Direction, as they were experiencing a rapid rise to fame at the same time.
“It was all very new for them as well, meeting someone at that time in your career, who is kind of at the same point, is very refreshing,” Perrie said.
But while Zayn and Perrie were dating, the Little Mix girls would repeatedly get asked about the relationship, and they found it very frustrating. Interviews from the time regularly compared One Direction and Little Mix’s success, and Perrie said they were accused of leeching off the boys for fame. The bands were under the same record label and would perform at events together, making these comparisons worse.
“I felt bad for the girls, because a lot was made to be about him,” she said. “At the time it must have been frustrating for the other girls… getting asked about him all the time.”
Perrie explained in the interview that her and the girls “felt things together,” so when Zayn called off their engagement, it was difficult for them too.
“Oh, absolutely. They went through it, those girls,” she said.
At the same time as the breakup, Little Mix went number one with their single Black Magic. Perrie was at a career high but an emotional low. She talked about putting on a brave face during performances, with the support of her bandmates.

In the end, it was the Little Mix girls who helped Perrie move on.
“The girls made me go on a dating app,” she told Paul C Brunson.
There, she met her fiancé Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The pair have been public since 2017, and have a son named Axel.
