The Pink Cardigan trend explained, because it’s driving me crazy on TikTok

You’re not old, it just makes zero sense

Gen Z literally talks in riddles, whether it’s TikTok brainrot which somehow made it into the Cambridge Dictionary or slang that makes you feel positively ancient.

The worst thing is when a new TikTok trend emerges and everyone in the comments seems to know what it means so you have to go down a Google rabbit hole. Well, that’s what happened to me with the Pink Cardigan TikTok phrase recently.

Right, what on earth does Pink Cardigan mean on TikTok?

So a load of videos are floating around on the app with the hashtag “pink cardigan” and it actually originated from a TikToker under the username @jayyburt.

Last month, Jay posted a video standing in front of a restaurant window sticking his tongue out at a couple eating inside – and that’s literally it.

The camera man pans between Jay and the couple, who aren’t weirded out at all by a random kid sticking his tongue out at them with a deadpan expression. Both smiling, the woman even gives a thumbs up to Jay and neither seem to be bothered about being filmed.

He put a 2012-esque filter on it and a classic lockdown TikTok sound, with the trend seemingly getting its name from Jay’s characteristic pink cardigan he wears on some videos.

The video got 6.8 million views… yeah. Now, people are recreating it, mostly outside fast food restaurants.

The whole trend is just sticking your tongue out and filming people’s reactions. Gen Z humour is officially broken if this is the new prank to pull on people because honestly, it’s just a bit weird.

One girl partook in the trend on a plane and honestly? She’s clearly got no social anxiety to have to sit in front of him for the rest of that flight.

Despite the huge amount of people taking part in the Pink Cardigan TikTok trend, some people disagree with how ethical it is to film and post strangers online. Users in the comments of Alli’s video wrote: “Our generation is actually so bad, like are we not supposed to just put random people on the internet?”

Another commented: “Imagine it the other way around.”

To be honest, it’s just another random thing I don’t need to worry about until some kids target me in Nando’s or something.
