Owen Cooper ‘booted’ out of running for Best Actor at the Emmys for Adolescence – here’s why
Netflix is playing with a technicality
Owen Cooper has far and away been the biggest success story of Adolescence – which is a feat in itself considering the entire limited series has been a symphony of success stories for Netflix. Smashing ratings left, right and centre and gaining a perfect acclaimed score on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s a beast. And yet it’s Owen Cooper as Jamie, the 13 year old arrested for murder, stealing the show in his first ever acting performance professionally. All eyes are on the awards this show is clearly going to gobble up, but apparently Owen Cooper is no longer going to be in the Best Actor category when it comes to the Emmys for his work in Adolescence on Netflix.
The Emmys is the first major awards season in the calendar when it airs in August, and nominations drop in July. The industry expert predictions at Gold Derby track who is most likely to win big in the major categories – and they just swapped Owen Cooper out with Stephen Graham in the Best Actor category as the site claims it received “intel” about how Netflix is going to submit nominations for Adolescence.
It’s been called a ‘genius move’ by an expert
Although it hasn’t been finalised and it’s just expert rumblings, apparently Netflix feel like Owen Cooper is more likely to win big in Best Supporting Actor instead. It’s an attempt to maximise wins.

One expert gave some insight into why Netflix might do this, telling the Mail Online “Owen Cooper was magnificent as Jamie but he’s only on screen in two episodes so his chances of overhauling Colin Farrell were relatively slim. Stephen Graham however holds the whole show together and appears in three of the four parts. He has a much better chance with his industry pedigree of reeling Colin in.
“Swapping categories is actually a genius move by Netflix. I’m sure Owen will be favourite for the Best Supporting Actor trophy before we know it. He has a much higher chance of winning that than Best Actor.”
Either way, Adolescence needs to absolutely clean up. It’s what it deserves.
