The White Lotus producers explain how the wild incest isn’t just for shock value

Well, it happened. From episode one of The White Lotus season three – it seemed pretty clear that the show was building up to a weird incest plot between Saxon and Lochlan. Everyone knew it was coming, and lo and behold in the latest episode we looked on in horror as the brothers shared a lingering kiss during a drugged up drunk game with Chelsea and Chloe. Chelsea and Chloe necked on too, but all eyes widened watching Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola lock lips as Saxon and Lochlan in a twist that was being teased all season. But whilst this moment in The White Lotus was shocking, producers of the show have now spoken about how the incest is not purely for shock value.

Despite the fact it was, indeed, very shocking.

Speaking to The New York Post, David Bernad executive producer of The White Lotus spoke about how the incest was not for shock value and what might be coming for Lochlan and Saxon as season three progresses. He also discussed whether he thought the incest had gone too far.

“No, in terms of that — that’s all [creator Mike White]. Mike is brilliant, and I think those big story turns are not just for shock,” he exclusively told The Post.

Bernad added, “There’s a specific reason in terms of the narrative storytelling, and the larger thematic idea Mike is trying to get across.”

He explained, “as the season wraps up, you’ll see the purpose of that story turn. The show goes there for a larger thematic idea. I love that family storyline, especially the brother story — and, it culminates in a very satisfying way.”
