
QS World University 2025 Rankings: Uni of York ranked by subjects
York ranked 75th globally for Arts and Humanities
The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject have just dropped, and the University of York’s official top rated faculty is Arts and Humanities.
This year, the rankings feature 55 individual subjects across five broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
Overall, the University of York was ranked 184th in the world in the 2025 QS World Ranking, falling over 30 places from the 2022 survey. The rankings assess over 1500 institutions, positioning York two places above Cardiff University and considerably higher than both Queen’s University Belfast and University of Loughborough.
Arts and Humanities
University of York’s Arts and Humanities subjects were placed 75th globally, the highest of all York’s rankings.
For singular subjects, the following were ranked in the top 100: Archaeology at 25th, English Literature at 32nd, History and Linguistics both at 99th.
York’s Arts and Humanities employability and employer reputation has been given a 56.7, the lowest of all five ranked subject areas. For comparison, the University of Leeds Arts and Humanities employability lies at 72.4.
Life Sciences and Medicine
The University of York ranked 177th in the world for Life Sciences and Medicine, covering subjects such as Psychology, Biological Sciences, Pharmacology, and Medicine.
Medicine ranked at 153rd globally, and Psychology in the top 100 at 97th.
Employer reputation for Life Sciences and Medicine at York came in at 61, the highest of York’s five ranked subject areas.
Social Sciences and Management
York’s Social Sciences has been ranked 270th globally, but particular subjects are placed a lot higher.
Economics ranked 171st, Sociology at 88th, and Social Policy and Administration at a very respectable 41st in the world.
Employability for Uni of York’s Social Sciences faculty is at 58.6.
Natural Sciences

The University of York’s Natural Sciences ranked 257th globally, including the subjects Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, and Physics.
The employability and employer reputation was given a 60.6, the second highest of the five subject areas.
Engineering and Technology
York’s Engineering and Technology faculty was ranked between 401st-450th this year, with a particular ranking and score not applicable. The subjects include Computer Science and all kinds of Engineering degrees.
However, the employability score was at 60.1, one of the higher numbers for the University of York.
Overall, the University of York appears to be falling short in terms of employability numbers, but continues to have multiple subjects in the global top 100.
