Long-running adventure film festival returns to Sheffield ‘bigger and better’

The perfect student weekend for the cool and the curious

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (SHAFF) is back in Sheffield this month as part of the annual Festival of the Outdoors.

SHAFF will be taking place from 21st to 23rd March, with Sheffield’s reputation as the “Outdoor City” bringing some of the best new films in the outdoor adventure space to the city.

Organiser Matt Heason said: “Sheffield has a unique outdoor culture and this festival brings that to the big screen in a way that excites, inspires and brings people together.”

Celebrating adventure, storytelling, and the natural world, SHAFF has built a reputation as one of the UK’s leading adventure film festivals.

The event isn’t just for the adrenaline, sport junkies however, as Matt added: “It is not just for climbers, runners or mountain bikers, it is for anyone who loves a great story.”

Stories to be highlighted in SHAFF this year include wild ice figure skating, searching on North America’s coldest mountain and local adventures within the Made in Sheffield strand of the festival.

This year the event is also going “beyond the screen” and offering festival goers the chance to attend creative panels, use VR technology to travel the world, and even try their luck in sauna pods and an ice cold plunge pool.

For the first time since the festival started in 2006, all panels and talks will be free to attend.

Students will get a discount on the screenings too – bringing the price down to £8.50 a ticket.

These events will be held within the Creative Lounge and Café at Showroom Cinema, Sheffield’s own independent cinema opposite the train station.

Conversations will cover a range of topics from sustainability within adventure sports to diversity in the outdoors.

Special outdoor screenings and early premiers are due to take place prior to the event in and around Sheffield. This includes the city centre’s Winter Gardens and in Bakewell in the Peak District.
