Revealed: These are officially the most and least popular York colleges
Wait, Alcuin is actually popular…
Ever wondered just how you ended up with the people in your flat? Like, what are the actual odds? We all know that students practically fight to get into David Kato or Anne Lister, but what about the rest?
We’ve all wondered how popular our college actually is; is it a top choice pick or a random seventh on the average list? Everyone believes that their college is the best (obviously) but let’s take a look at the facts.
Thanks to data obtained by The York Tab in a Freedom of Information request, we can now reveal which college is officially the most popular based on accomodation applications received by incoming students in the 24/25 academic year.
The data shows the first preferences of applicants that applied for each college accommodation this year, meaning some numbers are significantly lower than others. Sorry Derwent, but you just don’t look very nice and everyone clearly agrees.
Coming in at first place is David Kato with 2,515 total applications, accounting for a whopping near 40 per cent of all first preference applications. Kato’s Band 2 Ensuite has the highest application rate of every single room available at Uni of York, nearly doubling the numbers that chose Anne Lister’s twinning Band 2 Ensuite as their first choice. Very interesting. What’s the actual difference? Clearly Kato just seemed a lot more welcoming on open days than Lister.
Second place goes to Anne Lister with 1,485 applications, no shock there. All brand new and shiny and everything…

In third place is Vanbrugh, with 810 first place applications. To be fair, Vanbrugh is a great college and not too expensive compared to others, so it definitely makes sense why it’s placed at third. The Vanbrugh arms is arguably one of the best bars on campus too. Can we now officially call Vanbrugh the heart of Campus West?
Next up is Alcuin! With 635 applications, it’s rated pretty high overall. It might have a boring reputation, but students obviously love this vibe for first year. Alcuin itself is quite cute, far enough from other loud colleges and perfect for a quick trip to the library. Plus, it’s got The Kitchen. Enough said.
Considering the size of Halifax, it’s only ranked fifth on the list with 410 students applying. It’s the cheapest college, but also the furthest away, meaning some first year students might be a bit hesitant about putting it as first choice. All Halifax students eventually love it though!
Derwent and James are next, completing the Campus West colleges with a respectable 275 and 230 applications. Clearly, West is a lot more popular with first year students than East (if you ignore the thousands going for Kato and Lister).
Langwith and Goodricke sit at the bottom of the list with just 150 and 125 first choice applications. It’s quite sad really. The students in these colleges know that they’re actually really great, but the price of the accommodation is questionable for what you get.
Finally, in last place, we have Constantine College. With just 100 students putting it as their first choice, Uni of York’s most expensive college is obviously not worth it.
For particular rooms, the one with the highest first choice applications goes to David Kato, Band 2 Ensuite, with 1,705 students applying. Anne Lister’s twin room only had 700 applicants – is it not the same room? Someone please confirm or deny.
The lowest was Derwent’s Band 2 large shared bathroom, with, wait for it, zero applications. Zero. If you’re in that room right now, I’m so sorry. Hope you’re okay.
So whether you’re living it up in Kato or feeling jealous in another East college, just know that at least everyone’s sink is blocked, not just yours x
