Tan France admits he cut off his iconic Queer Eye quiff after reading endless hate comments

‘Didn’t realise they hated it so much’

Yes, the cast of Queer Eye might be iconic but I’d argue the gravity defying quiff of Tan France was the most mesmerising thing on the show. So you can imagine my utter heartbreak when I opened Instagram, only to see that Tan France had decided to chop off his hair following the most recent season Queer Eye.

As it turns out the reason behind it is genuinely heartbreaking, as Tan revealed during an interview with Page Six it was all down to endless hate comments.

He admitted that whilst he wishes it was purely a decision he made entirely on his own, he didn’t realise how much people “hated” his hair until he started reading comments about the new season.

He explained: “I would love to say it’s because I just fancied a change. But really, what sparked it was I did something that I try really hard not to do — which is I looked at comments about myself after the new season.

“Because every time a new season comes out, I just want to know that the audience is enjoying the show and [if I did] something on that season that they didn’t love, maybe I’ll correct it the following season.”

But, as Tan France soon found out, the most popular complaint gaming Queer Eye fans was actually about his hair with people saying the style makes him look “uptight”

He continued: “I saw so many people hate my hair. And I thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t realise they hated [it] so much. So maybe I’ll try something while I’m still ‘relatively’ young. So that’s why I changed it.”

Tan admitted that whilst she thought he’d “developed a thick skin” after years starring in Queer Eye, he realised the harsh criticism about his hairstyle “still stung.”

Still, he’s since realised he “feels better” with his new hair, saying: “I do feel better with this hair. It’s amazing what [the comments] did for me. The response was basically, ‘That hair made you seem like you’re really uptight, but you’re not.’”

He added: “I can’t believe that my hair made people think that I was that uptight. It was just, I’ve had that same hair for 15 years. It was just easy for me to do, I could do my hair in literally two to three minutes maximum. But apparently people thought I spent an hour on my hair.”
