Player 007 originally written to be a ‘sleazy bully’ in Squid Game, so what changed?

He’s such a wholesome gem in the show

The relationship between Player 007 and his mother, Player 149 in Squid Game season two is genuinely so wholesome, but as it turns out his character was originally supposed to be completely different.

In an interview with Netflix, actors Yang Dong-geun, who is Player 007, and Kang Ae- sim who plays his mother revealed more about the original personality of his character.

The creator of Squid Game season two had originally planned for Player 007 to be much more of a bully, however once they saw the dynamic he had with his mother they changed his personality.

Yang revealed: “The director initially imagined Yong-sik [Player 007] to be stronger, more bully-like character.” Kang added: “Kind of sleazy.”

The two then elaborated further on what caused the sudden change to his personality, explaining: “But just having his mom there in the game with him brings out completely different sides of him.

“This is actually the hairstyle the director requested. So based on the hairstyle, he doesn’t come across as the strong character the director had in mind at all. He looks rather cute, dorky, and a little goofy.”

But it seems the real mean one out of the two could actually be Player 149, as whilst she might look like a sweet old woman, there’s some serious evidence she’s actually in charge of the whole of Squid Game.

First off, whilst all the other players joined the games because of their debts, she joins Squid Game to “help her son” but does that just mean she came with the power to protect him since she knows the risks the games hold.

A lot of people are also speculating she could actually be Player 001’s wife from the first season of the show, which would be an absolutely insane twist.

Other signs which point towards the theory of Player 149 being the mastermind behind Squid Game is the fact she was the only player who was allowed to take a weapon in with her, albeit a makeshift one.

Whilst the organisers might have let her take it in as they thought it’d make the games more entertaining, was it also because she has the authority to take in contraband items because of her role?

Then during the hand holding game when her son was carried into a room by someone else, I genuinely assumed that was the end of her but Player 001 helped to rescue her.

It would seem strange to do so if there wasn’t a benefit to him, and since we know his true role in the games, perhaps he knows to keep his boss safe at all costs during the challenges.

Lastly, when Player 388 was about to fight the guards she asked him to stop and told him it wasn’t worth dying for. Was she genuinely trying to help save his life, or save the life of her own staff members?

So whilst Player 007 was originally written to be the “bully” in Squid Game season two, perhaps the real villain is his mother…
