Apparently this is the reason Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott split – and it wasn’t cheating

Honestly, this makes so much sense

In a heartbreaking start to 2025, Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott have split up.

After five years together, sources have reported that the couple have called it quits.

Many believed Sam and Zara split due to cheating but fans have another theory.

Recently, there have been numerous rumours swirling around social media as to why the Made in Chelsea stars broke up with one source saying it was due to Zara’s infidelity during her time on The X Factor in 2019.

The source told the Daily Mail: “Zara and Sam’s relationship just never had felt like it was heading for the long haul. They never really recovered from Zara’s cheating, most couples would have struggled lasting for as long as they did afterwards.

“Zara had some big making up to do, especially with Louise, she really wasn’t happy when Sam took her back. But she managed to make it work and they had some great times together again, but it just felt like it was never going to be truly serious.”

However, fans think that this may actually not be the case, and that the real reason Sam and Zara split up is due to him not proposing to her.

Fans took to Reddit to discuss the split, and one comment with 300 upvotes said: “A shame but not surprising. I always found it odd how much they talked about wanting to get married one day but never got engaged. I always sensed Sam wasn’t sure.”

Others agreed with the Redditer, with another fan saying: “This is it for me for two people who seemed so committed to show themselves as happy and healthy they did not seem in any rush to get engaged and married. That’s always a sign things probably aren’t going as well as they want to make everyone believe.”

Sam and Zara previously joked about getting engaged in an Instagram Reel in September.

In the video captioned: “Saw this on TikTok and it couldn’t relate to it more. The real reason we’re not engaged!”, Zara can be see lying in bed whilst a fart noise is added to the footage. The camera then pans to Sam who’s holding a rose and a sign which says: “Will you marry me?”

Sam then rips up the signs and jokingly packs his bags, acting disgusted at the fart.

However, on a more serious note, the couple have openly spoken about the getting married, with Sam telling The Sun in 2023: “I’m so happy being with the person I know I’m going to spend the rest of my life with, I don’t see any sort of rush at all. We speak about marriage a lot, but there’s no pressure to put a ring on it.”

In a 2021 Q&A, Zara also spoke about having similar feelings and told fans she would “love” to get married one day.

We can only keep our fingers crossed that they’ll get back together soon.
