Hang on, Gav! Gavin and Stacey’s Neil the Baby competed on The Voice Kids last year!?

Oscar Hartland has played Neil the Baby on Gavin and Stacey since he was, erm, a baby. We saw him grow up a bit for the 2019 special, but now we’ve seen him as a teenager in the final ever episode. Neil the Baby wowed everyone with his cover of Blackbird at Smithy and Sonia’s sham wedding, but did you know last year the Gavin and Stacey legend was actually on The Voice Kids – and this info has honestly gagged everyone.

Oscar Hartland said in 2022 that he’d been focussing on music, and he wasn’t kidding. The actor was part of a grunge band called Redwood City and the band dropped two singles on Spotify. He also said “Music is my thing at the moment, I’m loving it,” he told Wales Online back in 2022. “I want to do stuff like Guns n Roses, Queen, and the darkness. I also love DJing as well, I have some decks.”

But then in 2023, Oscar Hartland was on The Voice Kids and auditioned for the show after focussing more on his solo projects than the band. He’s dropped two singles currently on his solo Spotify page too.

On The Voice Kids, Oscar dropped the bombshell that he’s from Gavin and Stacey straight away with a little message from the mother of the show and Neil the Baby herself: Nessa. Oscar’s mum told him he had a special friend on the phone, and Ruth Jones says in Nessa’s voice “Oh, Neil the Baby, what’s occurin? We knows whats occurin, you’re on The Voice Kids. Don’t forget you take after your mother when it comes to music. You go out there and you smash it kid alright!? Crackin!”

Oscar also told the judges “A lot of people don’t recognise me now, but I was in a huge TV show. I was Neil the Baby in Gavin and Stacey in season 3 and I was Neil the Baby again in the Christmas special 2019.

“Being in Gavin and Stacey it was crazy. Working with huge names like James Cordon, Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones. People know me as Neil the Baby from Gavin and Stacey which I absolutely love, but now I want to be known for my music and singing.”

Gavin and Stacey icon Oscar got through to the battle stages of The Voice Kids, with Neil the Baby himself being part of team Danny Jones – who has now gone on to win I’m A Celeb this year. Oscar was beaten in the battle stages.
