The big first twist of the finale was that after Nessa proposed to Smithy in the 2019 Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, the actual person Smithy was marrying was the evil Sonia. Laura Aikman who plays Sonia had to keep her involvement a huge secret and stayed in a different hotel to the cast and crew. She didn’t even tell her family, and shared a nice video of them finding out with the rest of the nation on Christmas Day.
