Enough is enough: Did the annoying 28 Weeks Later kids die or will they be in the new film?

I pray to never see them again, but the ending never gave us proper confirmation

Let’s just rip the plaster off right now: I HATE the kids from 28 Weeks Later. I don’t think until I rewatched the 2007 sequel to Danny Boyle’s 2002 classic last week I remembered how utterly evil they are. And that deeming of evil isn’t really personal opinion, more based on the fact that if it wasn’t for them being selfish and breaking the ONE rule they were told not to do then billions of people wouldn’t have died, the rage virus apocalypse would have ended with the first film and we wouldn’t have the end of the world as we know it. So, it’s truly that deep. The ending of 28 Weeks Later is open to interpretation – so here’s a quick catch up deep dive into the theories on whether the little shit kids managed to survive and will be in the sequel.

Why are they so annoying?

The kids in question are the children of Don, one of the main characters in 28 Weeks Later. Imogen Poots plays Tammy, and Mackintosh Muggleton plays Andy. The story shows that when the events of 28 Days Later happened, the two children were out of the country so they escaped the danger of the rage virus being unleashed across the UK. In 28 Weeks Later, the two have been repatriated to the UK after the infected start dying of hunger.

The repatriated are living in the ready for purpose Isle of Dogs, whilst the rest of the UK continues to be cleared of the infected by the US army. The one rule they are told is to not leave the area. Tammy and Andy ignore this, venture out to their old home in London and come across a load of danger before finding their infected mother. She is asymptomatic with the rage virus, and could basically help create a cure.

Back on the Isle of Dogs, Don visits his wife in the containment facility and breaks protocol. When they kiss, she infects him and causes him to rampage through the facility and infect basically everyone and the apocalypse starts all over again. It’s literally all the kids selfish fault!

Did they die or survive?

The debate comes down to the fact that at the end of 28 Weeks Later, it’s unclear whether the sequel ending has them survive or had them dead. Andy is bit by his father but is asymptomatic like his mother, and he and Tammy get rescued in a helicopter to go to France where there’s safety.

But in the final moments of the film, we see the infected ravaging around the Eiffel Tower – showing that the rage virus has hit mainland Europe. It’s implied this is because of Andy and Tammy. But with the kids being potentially asymptomatic like their mother, they might be alive even if they spread it through Europe.

However – we hope and pray that the 28 Weeks Later kids did NOT survive and that they aren’t in 28 Years Later. Much evidence supports this, notably the fact that that they aren’t in the cast list – so unless Boyle and co are keeping their involvement a surprise we should be okay. 28 Years Later seemingly follows on from the OG film’s storylines as well.

If they are in it, though – let’s hope they get tried for crimes against humanity for their selfish ways.
