28 Years Later is the first of a planned trilogy of sequels, but what’s going to happen?
Part two’s going to be called The Bone Temple and it’s already wrapped production!?
You know, you wait 17 long years for a sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, and then three come at once. Obviously we’ve all been chomping at the bit for the franchise after the trailer dropped last week and had everyone obsessing over Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s masterful zombie apocalypse franchise all over again – and 28 Years Later is LONG awaited. What you might not know is that not only is 28 Years Later set to be incredible, but the team have already got a planned trilogy in the pipeline. Alex Garland himself has confirmed he has written the scripts for three separate movies, so here’s all we know about 28 Years Later and the planned trilogy and what on earth is actually going to go down when it releases next year.

The first film we’ve obviously got the trailer for, and can start to piece together what’s going to happen in it. The official synopsis for 28 Years Later and the trailer shows us some stuff about the lore which changes the landscape drastically.

The description reads: “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
Because of how much time has passed since the first two films, this trilogy gets to really dive into the post apocalyptic world. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Jamie, and we see him and a child out in the wilderness – it remains to be seen who the other big names will be playing. Especially Cillian Murphy, who is returning as Jim.
28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple
So Cillian has been spotted on the set of the sequel for ’28 years later’ that is apparently called ‘The bone Temple’.
Peaky Blinders starts filming in 10 days, someone explain to me the insane SCHEDULE of that man cause jesuschrist how is it even possible. pic.twitter.com/p133wjqjEW— michi³⁰ᴵ⁰⁷ (@wiwaonly) September 18, 2024
Shot back to back with 28 Years Later, Part II is already in motion. The title got apparently revealed back in July, after a trademark was filed. By September, everyone knew Cillian Murphy would definitely be in it because he was seen filming scenes in Ennerdale. This month, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has confirmed he’s back for it too. Which is SLIGHTLY annoying, because we now know both of them don’t die in 28 Years Later.
Danny Boyle is directing 28 Years Later, but The Bone Temple will be directed by Nia DaCosta. Alex Garland again wrote the screenplay.
The unnamed third film
The third film in this new trilogy (and the fifth in the entire franchise) is as of right now still untitled. We know absolutely nothing of this one – and assume right now it will only fully hit development if things go well with the first two. Alex Garland has confirmed the script has been written for it, but we don’t know any details about cast or director yet.
