Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has revealed that he spent a “rough night” sheltering in a Ukraine metro station after an air raid threat from Russia. The actor is best known as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, a role he played throughout its entire eight-season run. But more recently, he’s been focusing on humanitarian work, having become a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) back in 2016. In his role, he’s advocated for issues such as climate action and gender equality. This week, he arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine, to learn about projects implemented with UNDP support. As reported by Reuters, on Wednesday, October 28, he spent the night in the Kyiv metro station alongside other local residents seeking shelter. In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Game of Thrones actor shared a series of air raid alerts on his phone. He then posted a photo of him with his camping gear passing a series of tents in the station. Alongside this, Coster-Waldau wrote, “Spent a night in the Kyiv Metro. Pretty rough night.” But he was quick to acknowledge, “I get to do it one night and tell the tale but for thousands of Ukrainians it’s a necessity to be safe during the shelling. We need to keep helping the civilians and uphold the rules we all agree on.” Speaking to Reuters, Coster-Waldau elaborated further about his mission in Ukraine as Goodwill Ambassador. According to a statement from the plant, the actor met with staff and toured parts of the facility on Monday, October 26.
