Right, if you’ve spent any time on TikTok recently you must have come across the eerie video meme of that cat saying, “Boo! Scared? Don’t be afraid I’m a friend.” And let me tell you, reader, I have been literally terrified every time I see that video it literally haunts my nightmares.

So, in an effort to dispel my fear let’s have a look at where this viral TikTok meme actually came from in the first place, because I’ll be damned if a video of a cat telling me “don’t be scared I’m a friend” keeps me up at night.

Okay, so the meme does actually come from an original video of a cat from a TV show, although the current version has obviously been edited using AI. The cat was originally called Whiskers and appeared on the show TV Funhouse.

I just noticed a familiar face while scrolling, along with several comments saying “It’s from a Russian YouTube video.” Nope! Here’s the ACTUAL origin of the cat from the “Boo u scared?” meme (click the sound if context is needed). YouTube video “Creamy Delicious Poop” borrowed from user UnYin99 (it’s only got < 1000 likes – go to YT and show them love please).

The show was based on Robert Smigel’s SNL sketches of the same name and aired for eight episodes on Comedy Central.

And no, it certainly wasn’t for children and the animals who could also talk are still scary honestly. They included Fogey the Dog, Whiskers the Cat, Chickie the Rooster, Hank the Lobster and Jeffery the Duck. The animals discuss hangovers, swear and encourage violence. Weird stuff.
