Okay, here’s how to find the actually life-changing new Spotify Offline Backup feature

It literally gives you hundreds of songs to listen to when you’ve got no internet connection!?

| UPDATED

Have you ever had the misfortune of enduring a train from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston? If you have, you will be aware that this route, for whatever ungodly reason, is some kind of phone signal dead zone. It is the year 2024, but we can’t work out how to get even a 4G bar on those railway tracks. If you think “who cares, the trains have WiFi” – you’ve clearly never tried to actually do anything on that WiFi. If I could show you how many times I have spent a very rushed hour at my home before a train making a rapid playlist called “train” with a launched in bunch of songs to download offline so I can cover all bases when my signal goes, you would be shocked. Never again though, because today Spotify has rolled out a brand new feature it’s calling Offline Backup – and all of our lives just got infinitely easier.

Here’s how to find the new playlist everyone’s buzzing

What is Spotify Offline Backup?

Offline Backup is a new playlist system that Spotify will give you when your phone can’t get a connection, or you’re in airplane mode. Previously, to use Spotify in these situations you’d have to have manually downloaded tracks to use offline. This meant if you lost signal, you’d be stuck with whatever you’d remembered to download. The tube will literally never make me groan again.

Offline Backup uses songs you’ve had on heavy rotation from queueing or from just recently streamed to make a playlist of literally 100s of songs ready to go when your signal drops without any need to download them. When I’ve been playing around with it and as soon as I was in airplane mode I could access offline backup on my Spotify home page. It had loads of songs I’ve been streaming a lot recently as well as some of my old favourites. I recently have been listening to a Pitchfork ranking, and the songs I’d queued from that were all in there.

It’s just one of them playlists that hits the spot you didn’t know you needed, weirdly. And I’m someone who always knows what I want to listen to. I’ve wrote a fair bit at Spotify intelligence getting better and better and this is the best bunch of recommendations I’ve had in a while. Offline Backup launches and rolls out today. Your commute home just got so much better I fear.
