Lancaster serial rapist sentenced to life

Mateusz Otfinowski, 23, from Morecambe has been found guilty of rape and been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Preston Crown Court heard how Otfinowski preyed on “lone vulnerable” victims.

His attacks happened last year. His first was on March 3rd, a student had fallen out with her friends and decided to walk home alone.

She lost her way and met Otfinowski who then convinced her that he lived in the same area and that he would walk her home.

After walking for a short distance, he demanded the woman to perform a sex act and when she refused, Otfinowski became violent and proceeded to rape her three times before leaving her in the street distressed and traumatised.

The case was reported to the police but the DNA taken did not match any on the national database.

Later last year Otfinowski attempted to climb through the window of a flat shared by three female students intending to commit another sex offence – but was thwarted as the girls had locked their bedroom doors when they went to bed.

He pleaded guilty to the two attacks as well as trespassing with the intent of sexual offence.

Detective Inspector Richard McCutcheon says “Thankfully cases like this are rare and I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a rape or sexual assault in any circumstances to come forward and report the crime to us.”

Following Otfinowski’s sentencing Judge Anthony Russell QC told him: “You are a real danger to women.”
