Attention Lancaster Freshers: Here is your guide to some of the best Lancaster takeaways

The age old question: Sultans or Greggs?

So, you’ve packed up all of your fancy dress costumes and moved to Lancs, ready for the most chaotic Welcome Week events that we have to offer. However, in between finding the biggest bag you own to stock up on Freshers’ Fair freebies and trying to become the first person to actually complete the college bar crawl, you’ll definitely be craving some post- night out takeaways.

We’ve taken all of the effort out of finding a good takeaway to become your staple student haunt by compiling a list of some of the best that Lancs has to offer. Whether you can’t be bothered to spend your time cooking, haven’t done a big shop yet, or just fancy a burger, we’ve got the perfect spots for you.

Greggs

There’s no way we could make a Lancs food guide and not include the most popular food spot on campus. The queue for the Greggs in Alex Square sometime stretches halfway to the library. If that isn’t proof that Lancs students love sausage rolls, we don’t know what is.

Sultans

For students living on campus, a night out isn’t complete without a trip to Sultans from the Underpass. Sultans is a kebab and Indian takeaway restaurant that sells everything from a lamb chop meal to Oreo milkshakes, and is a definite student favourite. There are two Sultans in Lancaster: one near Bowland Tower on campus and one on Caton Road, and your uni experience won’t be anywhere near complete without a Sultans visit.

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is a really tasty and affordable Chinese takeaway option if you’re craving some chicken chow mein – or even some chicken noodle soup (some of the best you’ll find in Lancs). It’s a more affordable option for uni students, and is located Green Street.

Burgshake

You might know Burgshake for their insanely random Ed Sheeran lookalike on their Instagram reels, or for their incredibly delicious chicken burger with Cheeto pieces (aka the Classy Chick, if you fancy a try), but maybe less well-known are their incredible milkshake options. Burgshake is perfect for movie nights with your new flatmates – and it’s right in the city centre, too!

Go Burrito

Go Burrito consists of comfort food perfect for a movie night with your flatmates. It’s available on Just Eat, Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Lancaster Eats, and the portions are really generous so there’s little chance of you being left hungry after your movie marathon – but if you are, you can always order some churros for dessert.

The Brunch Bar

If you’re missing the classic British big breakfast you may have had back home, then look no further than the Brunch Bar. The breakfast takeaway is ideal for a post-night-out morning meal when you desperately need some food but can’t be bothered moving further than the door, or to get some energy before heading into the chaos that is the Fresher’s Fair.

Hodgson’s Chippy

Life wouldn’t be complete without a good staple chippy, and Hodgson’s is perfect for the job. They have some of the nicest fish and chips we’ve ever had (and massive portion sizes, too) and is located on Prospect Street – it might not be on delivery apps, but it’s well worth the trek.

Aquila Pizzeria

Aquila Pizzeria is so popular it once even got its own Lancs Tab article and can be ordered on Just Eat, Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Lancaster Eats. If you feel like having something a bit fancier than Aldi’s frozen pizzas, then this takeaway could be at your door in 30 minutes fresh out of a pizza oven.

Lancaster Eats

While this isn’t technically a single takeaway, Lancaster’s very own food delivery app is even better because this app lets you see a long list of Lancs-specific takeaways that can be delivered right to your student accommodation in one convenient place. Lancaster Eats is definitely worth a download from Freshers this year.
