Netflix got most crucial scene in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story completely wrong

Out of all the things to get wrong, Netflix picked this?

In episode one of new true crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Netflix shows us a graphic retelling of how the Menendez parents both met their death. The killing scene showed the two brothers enter their Beverly Hills home, and shoot both of their parents multiple times.

José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez were killed in their Beverly Hills home on August 20th, 1989. In March 1990, the Menendez brothers were arrested for their parents’ murders and placed on trial. They were found guilty, and have been in prison ever since.

However, a crucial part of the death scene is told by Netflix wrong, and people on Twitter have been calling it out. One person said: “Why does every show about the Menendez brothers get the shooting scene WRONG EVERY TIME!!! Their parents were facing away from them and José never saw who shot him.”

Netflix did get the Menendez parents’ death scene wrong in Monsters

It’s true, this crucial detail of arguably the most important part of the show was not accurate to what happened in real life. In the show we saw Lyle and Erik killing their parents with multiple shot wounds. Their parents were sat on the sofa, and the brothers entered the room and opened fire. It took a few shots for José to lose his life, and during this time it looked as though he had become very aware it was his own sons shooting.

However, that’s not exactly how the crime happened in real life. In reality, it’s been reported Lyle Menendez fired his shotgun into the back of his father’s head, killing him almost instantly. José Menendez never saw his killers and was never aware that his sons were shooting him. One part that is true however, is that Lyle had to leave the house to retrieve more bullets to kill his mother.
