The real audio recording of 911 call Lyle and Erik Menendez made after their parents’ death

The latest crime series to hit Netflix is a dramatised retelling of the case of brothers, Lyle and Erik Menendez. In episode one of the Netflix series, we see actors play out what the brothers did to their parents, and following that there is a reconstruction of the 911 call Lyle and Erik Menendez made to police.

Lyle and Erik’s parents were José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. They were killed in their Beverly Hills home on August 20th, 1989. In March 1990, the Menendez brothers were arrested for their parents’ murders and placed on trial. They were found guilty, and have been in prison ever since.

After hearing the 911 call in the Netflix show, you might be wondering how accurate this recreation was – so here’s what the audio was like in real life.

The real life audio is quite similar to how it was shown in the Netflix series, just in real life the call was a lot longer. In the Netflix series, Lyle made the call and in the background Erik can be heard screaming. This was what happened in real life too.

In the real call, Lyle was breaking up what he was saying and sounded as though he was crying, as he said: “Someone killed my parents.” He then said “Erik man don’t,” before he told the person taking the call that his parents had been shot. Erik could be heard screaming, and Lyle told him to “stay there.”

The call handler said they have “a hysterical person” on the line with them, clearly to someone else working with them, before this person took over the call and told Lyle “we have units around.” Lyle told the person he didn’t know who had shot his parents as he had “just got home” and found them there. “Erik get away from them,” he could be heard shouting.

The call ended with Lyle being told someone was on their way with an ambulance to which he said: “Ok, I gotta go.”
