Scoop just dropped on Netflix and guys, the reviews are absolutely savage

When it was announced that Scoop was coming to Netflix, a dramatisation of the recent history when Prince Andrew had a car crash interview with Emily Maitlis on Newsnight – it’s safe to say the reaction was mixed. I was firmly in the camp who couldn’t wait for the salacious chaos to be retold, especially with a cast as amazing as Gillian Anderson and Billie Piper at top billing. But some thought it was going to be pointless. Today, Scoop has finally dropped on Netflix and the reviews are here – they’re savage. They’re brutal. Here’s a roundup of what the critics are saying about Scoop on Netflix and the savage reviews.

‘Laboriously acted and self admiring’

The Guardian dragged Scoop with a two star review. Peter Bradshaw went in, dragging the acting and the general sense of how pointless Scoop being made feels. He concludes saying “the drama is smothered by its own overwhelming sense of importance.” Yikes.

‘It’s lacking a point of view’

Empire gives Scoop three stars, and whilst it gives some praise to the salaciousness of it all the writer drags Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, and like The Guardian compares her performance unfavourably to her turn as Margaret Thatcher on The Crown. Empire also says it has no ‘point of view’. “What is Scoop adding to the table?” Empire asks, when it rightly points out you can just go on iPlayer and watch the full interview.

‘It feels iffy’

Radio Times criticised Scoop for portraying Prince Andrew as an almost comical ‘pantomime villain’ – not because Rufus Sewell is bad or because it sympathises with the Royal, but because of the serious subject matter of abuse at the heart of the Epstein saga and the insensitivity issue this might create.
